The collection contains 35 sermons 33 of which were edited 1616 by François d?Amboise and André Duchesne. Unfortunately the manuscript kept at the Sorbonne, used for the editio princeps, has disappeared. Only 6 out of the 33 sermons have survived, in three recently discovered manuscripts. A supplementary sermon (s. 34) of the same collection and a fragment of an extra sermon (against the Cistercians) turned up respectively in one of those manuscripts. Modern scholars have provided editions of the eight sermons that survived in the manuscripts. Well acquainted with Peter Abelard?s writings skills and style, the editor investigated and compared the six sermons of the editio princeps that are also present in the manuscripts. After this profound research, he took the immense job of re-editing the entire collection. Als Ethica nostra sollte sie der philosophischen Ethik eine christliche Konzeption zur Seite stellen und den Ertrag seiner bisherigen Studien zusammenfassen. Mit Abaelards gesamter Theologie wurde auch diese Abhandlung von Papst Innozenz II. als häretisch verurteilt und galt lange als verloren. Seit der Wiederentdeckung im 18. Jahrhundert trifft sie, auch aus philosophischer Sicht, auf reges Interesse. Dieses gilt vor allem der distinktiven Definition der Grundbegriffe Laster, Sünde, Wille und Tat sowie dem handlungstheoretischen Modell im ersten Teil des Werks. Der begriffshistorische Aspekt und die kontextuelle Einbindung in das Gesamtwerk Abaelards finden in der Einleitung zu diesem Band besondere Aufmerksamkeit, der den lateinischen Text aus dem Corpus Christianorum (CC CM 190) mit einer neuen deutschen Übersetzung darbietet.

The author discusses the Aristotelian text in an unbiased and thorough manner without avoiding any difficulties, and thereby addresses all basic issues of classical logic and semantics. The text forms part of the so-called mixed commentaries and is characterised by short self-contained systematic discussions within an explication of the Aristotelian text. Of particular significance are the discussions of predication (chapter 3), future contingentia (chapter 9) and modal logic (chapters 12-14).
In 1927, this substantial commentary was edited by Bernhard Geyer. The edition was based on the only manuscript of the text then known to scholarship (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana M 63 sup., fols. 45r-72r). In 1938, M. Grabmann discovered a second manuscript of the work (Berlin, Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz, lat. fol 624, fols. 97r-146r). As L. Minio-Paluello has shown, the final part of Abaelards text, which includes the long excursus on modal logic and the commentary on chapters 12-14, is accurately preserved only in this second manuscript. He edited this final part in 1958.
A detailed comparison of the two manuscripts showed that the differences between them are so numerous and noteworthy that a new critical edition was necessary. Geyers and Minio-Paluellos editions could be improved upon in several places. Aristotles text in the version known by Abaelard is also included. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

The Sententie of Peter
Abelard (1079-1142) are the only work of his which attempts a
comprehensive summary of Christian theology. It reflects the
awareness of early twelfth-century scholars of the need to teach
theology in a more systematic way and thereby to bring to the
attention of students the main questions to be faced in intelligent
enquiry into the contents and the sources of Christian belief.
However, Abelard denied writing a book of Sentences and also
disowned the authorship of a book of Sentences which was judged to
contain his heretical teaching at the council of Sens in 1140. In
this volume are presented the versions of a book of Sentences that
was written by a student or students of Abelard towards the end of
his teaching career, and a reconstruction of the parts of a
Liber sententiarum magistri Petri from which Abelard's
critics copied excerpts. In an introduction the authorship,
composition and contents of these texts is examined in detail. The
edition of the Sententie is designed to show the varying
versions of these and of other reports of Abelard's teaching,
reports that combine written and oral sources. David Luscombe is
responsible for this volume which owes much also to the generous
collaboration of assistants in the University of Sheffield, namely
J. Barrow, C. Burnett, K. Keats-Rohan and C. Mews.

These two
editions present Peter Abelard's Exposition of the Biblical
Hexameron and a work which is a shorter version of this and
which is usually called an Abbreviation. In his Exposition, which
is much influenced by the commentaries of St Augustine, Abelard
gives priority to the historical and literal sense and attempts a
naturalistic explanation of the process of creation while retaining
symbolic and moral interpretations. Like his contemporaries,
William of Conches and Thierry of Chartres, Abelard shows an
especial interest in Plato's Timaeus, in chaos theory, in the four
elements, and in the anima mundi. But his Exposition is also a
profoundly religious work. The manuscripts and the contributions of
their various scribes are closely examined in an Introduction in
which the possibility is considered that one of these scribes may
be Abelard himself. Additions and changes made by the scribes are
printed in different types in the edition which follows. A separate
Introduction assesses the nature of the Abbreviation and compares
it with the Exposition. The two editions were begun by Mary Romig+
and Charles Burnett respectively. They have been prepared for
publication by David Luscombe.

eigenständigen Disziplin. R.M. Ilgner ist Mitherausgeber der
zweisprachigen Serie Fontes Christiani, die ab 1992 bei Brepols
erscheinen wird. Seine Edition ist aus der Arbeit an einer deutschen
Übersetzung entstanden. Sie basiert auf den bekannten fünf
Handschriften des 12., 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts, die einer
